DETERMINING THE ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN ACADEMIC AND CO-CURRICULUM PARTICIPATION: A CASE STUDY AT SMK SERI NILAM

Abstract

Association rule mining is one of the process in Data Mining world that used discover knowledge from raw data into useful information. It is mostly useful in business field, however, nowadays it also has been widely used in education.

This project is basically focus on educational data mining, where researcher Determining the Association of Student Performance in Academic and Co-Curriculum participation: A Case Study at SMK Seri Nilam. The purpose of this project is to finding any possible relationship between student’s academic performances with their co-curriculum activities. As we all know, the co-curriculum activities in Malaysia is compulsory for every students. Since the activity is held after class time, which is in the evening, some issues have been raised by some parties, saying that co-curriculum activities is not relevant and can give a bad effect towards students’ performance. Therefore, this research was made to find any possible correlation between both.

The modelling technique used in this research is FP-Growth and Association Rule. FP-Growth algorithm used to find the frequency of the itemset exist in the data and generate all itemset whose support is more or equal to minimum support. Create Association Rule used to generate the highest confidence rules from each frequent itemset. Both method been performed in a software named Rapid Miner.

The finding from the modelling technique used has been visualize in dashboard to ease the user understand the result from the research. In order to access the usability of the dashboard, testing session with the expert and user was held to see the functionality, usability, and effectiveness of the research.
