AN APPLICATION OF FUZZY ANP IN EVALUATING STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN CALCULUS

Abstract

The requirement of mathematics subject in most of the programmes at the university level indicates that the skills are very important to be mastered. Universiti Teknologi MARA Terengganu Branch, Kuala Terengganu Campus (UiTMCTKKT) offers a Diploma in Science (CS110) program that requires students to take the Calculus subject in the study plan. However, most of the students cannot perform well in this subject. Low grades of Pre-Calculus result affect their academic results, specifically the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Students may be expected to extend their learning sessions to ensure that the subjects are passed along. Hence, the opportunity to graduate on time might be affected. There must be a reason or factors that lead to a low achievement in the students’ performances in Calculus. Therefore, there is a need to know the factors involved in measuring and analyzing students’ performance in Calculus.

For that reason, the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP), a decision-making instrument was constructed in this study that focuses on the selection process to calculate and to rank and identify the most influential factor that contributes to students' performance in Calculus. In this study, three factors and eleven sub-factor have been considered. The main factors are demographical, instructional factors, and individual factors. Then, the percentage value of each sub-factor was calculated using FANP, produced the rank for each sub-factor. By identifying the factor, students can realize what is the problem that leads to a bad performance in Calculus and find the solution to overcome their weakness. The findings show that sub-criteria of relationship between students and lecturer (S23) hits the first place in the ranking order followed by parenting style (S13) and, instructional strategies and methods (S22) among other sub-factors in this study.
